COUGAR HOOPS MISSION STATEMENT

To teach the game of Basketball to HFL boys and girls in a fun and competitive atmosphere that emphasizes skill development, sportsmanship, camaraderie and learning how to win and lose with class.

Cougar Hoops Info By Grade Level

Grade 3-4:  Focus is on skill development, building basketball IQ and fostering a love of the game (making it FUN).  Teams will compete in the GRAB (Greater Rochester Area Basketball) League at the appropriate grade level. In the event that there are enough players (16+) to build 2 teams, those teams will be BALANCED in both number of players, and skill levels.

Grade 5-6: Focus is on teaching better TEAM play, working on motion style offenses, building stronger defensive skills, and increased basketball IQ.  Teams will compete in the GRAB league and may “play up” or “play down” depending on skill level (a strong 5th grade team may get bumped up to the 6th grade division, a less-skilled 6th grade team may play against stronger 5th grade teams).  In the event that there are enough players (16+) to build 2 teams, we will hold an EVALUATION session, where Cougar Hoops board members will do individual skill assessments of all the players.  More skilled players will then be placed on to a team that competes in GRAB (Monroe County) and players still working on developing skills will be placed on a team that will compete primarily in the Livingston County League (also called the GLOW League).

Grade 7-8:  Focus is on readying players for Modified level basketball, as well as competing in the 7-8 Grade divisions in the GRAB League.  Teaching Zone Defensive schemes, advanced motion offenses, 3-point shooting will be the main focuses in practice.  Individual skills should be worked on outside of practices at this level.  Once Modified Basketball practice through the school program begin, Cougar Hoops practices will end (we don’t want kids to have to go to 2 practices per day).

ALL GRADE LEVELS:  The Monroe County GRAB League runs for 10 weeks, with each team playing two games per weekend (always on the same day at the same location).  GRAB League play begins the first week of December.  GRAB Website is https://grab.sportngin.com

Schedules are released at the beginning of each month, for that respective month (So December schedule will be posted before December 1, January schedule before Jan 1, etc…)

Teams will also have the ability to play in at least 2 tournaments during the season.  Coaches will solicit interest and availability from players prior to deciding which tournaments to play in.  Tournament list is also available at the GRAB Website above.
